You want to build a new website for your business, and the questions start right away. One of the first is "WordPress or code?". The short answer is that for most local businesses, a site built in custom code will be faster, more secure and better for ranking on Google. A WordPress site can be the right fit in some cases, but it's important to know its drawbacks.
What is a WordPress site?
A WordPress site is a site built with a ready-made content management system. Think of it like a LEGO set: you get lots of ready-made pieces and assemble your site from them. You can keep adding "plugins" that bring new capabilities, like a contact form or an image gallery.
The advantage is that it's relatively easy to add new content like an article or an image. The drawback is that every plugin is like another floor on a building. Too many plugins weigh the site down, slow it and open the door to security problems. Sometimes plugins clash with each other and cause faults.
For example, a hair salon that wants to add an appointment booking system. On WordPress, it would install an external plugin. That plugin may slow down the whole site, even for customers who only wanted to check the address. It can also stop working after another plugin is updated.

Comparison: WordPress vs a custom-code site
The main differences between the two approaches affect your site's speed, security and flexibility.
| Attribute | WordPress site | Custom-code site (like at MOVE) |
|---|---|---|
| Load speed | Depends on the theme and plugins, usually slower | Very fast - the code is written only for what's needed |
| Security | Popular and therefore a target for attacks, needs constant updates | High security, fewer targets to attack |
| Design flexibility | Limited to the chosen theme | Full flexibility, any design is possible |
| Ongoing maintenance | Plugins and the system must be updated frequently | No updates needed, the system is stable |
| Ownership of the asset | Depends on the builder, sometimes tied to paid themes or plugins | You fully own all the code and content |

What is a custom-code site?
A custom-code site is built from scratch, specifically for your business. It's like designing and building a house with an architect. Every wall, window and door is exactly where you wanted it. There's nothing unnecessary. The code is written only for the features your business really needs.
The result is an incredibly fast, very secure and completely flexible site. If you want to add a special capability in the future, the developer can build it right into the site. The traditional drawback was high cost and long development time. The MOVE model solves that, with a fixed price and a site live within 14 days.
Back to the hair salon example. On a custom-code site, the developer builds a simple booking system as part of the site. It's fast, doesn't weigh down the other pages, and always works. The client gets full ownership of that code.
WordPress or code: which is better for Google (SEO)?
Both a WordPress site and a custom-code site can reach high positions on Google. What decides it is the site's technical quality. Still, a custom-code site has an important built-in advantage: speed. Google prefers fast sites, because visitors prefer them too.
A WordPress site loaded with plugins and unnecessary files will almost always be slow. A clean custom-code site, by contrast, loads very fast. Speed is one of the factors Google checks when deciding which site to rank higher. So a custom-code site gives you a better starting point in that race.

When is WordPress the right choice after all?
Despite the drawbacks, there are situations where WordPress makes sense. It's mainly a fit when you need to manage a very large amount of content that's constantly updated, by different people with no technical background.
For example, a news site with dozens of writers, or a recipe magazine that publishes 5 new recipes a day. In cases like these, WordPress's convenient interface for adding content can be a significant advantage. Very large online stores with thousands of products can also benefit from a system like WordPress (WooCommerce) to manage inventory.

Is WordPress right for you?
A list of considerations to help you decide whether a WordPress site is the right solution for your specific needs.
Yes, like this
- You need a blog with many writers
- The site is a store with hundreds or thousands of products
- You plan to add content and images every day yourself
- Your budget only allows a do-it-yourself solution
Not like this
- Site speed is the top priority
- You want a unique design you won't see anywhere else
- The site is mainly a digital business card
- You don't want to deal with updates and technical maintenance
1How do you check your site's speed?
The simple, free way to check speed is with Google's tool, PageSpeed Insights. Just open the link, paste your site's address and click "Analyze". The tool gives you a score from 1 to 100 for performance on mobile and desktop.
Don't panic if the scores are low. Most sites, especially WordPress sites, don't score highly. What matters is understanding where the problems are. The tool spells out exactly what's slowing the site down. A score above 90 is considered excellent. A score below 50 points to a problem that needs attention, because it hurts both the user experience and your Google ranking.

This score shows the site loads very fast, which is great for visitors and for Google.
Accessibility - 100
The site is accessible to people with disabilities.
Best practices - 100
The site is built to modern technical standards.
SEO - 100
The site is built in a way Google can easily understand.

2How do you make sure your site is built right for the future?
Whether you choose WordPress or code, it's important to make sure you own your digital asset. Make sure you get full ownership of the domain (the site's name), all the content and all the source code. That way you won't depend on any provider.
Another question is how the site guides search engines. Every site has a file called robots.txt. It's a plain text file that tells search engines like Google which pages to crawl and which not to. It's important that this file is set up correctly, so it doesn't accidentally block important pages.
Text · An example of a valid robots.txt file
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xmlUser-agent: *- addresses all search engine robots.Disallow: /wp-admin/- tells them not to enter the WordPress admin area. This matters for security.Allow: /- lets them crawl the rest of the site.User-agent: Googlebot- addresses Google's robot specifically.Sitemap: ...- gives the address of the sitemap, which helps Google find all the pages.
